One of the most annoying things about being the youngest one in a group is that when you’re watching a movie or TV show and it ends, everyone looks at you like you’re supposed to do something.
But also, if you’re watching with friends, you may have to fight for the remote so there won’t be any no channel surfing. A know a few guys who can’t watch TV for 20 seconds unless it’s a fight scene.
Watching TV alone has its perks. I love the fact that there is no one to feel awkward about falling asleep in front of the TV. (One of those times you wish you had no empathy.) And, since you don’t have to answer to anyone else, you can just eat all the snacks you want, right?
But besides these great qualities of watching TV alone, it can also be pretty boring. If you are out of fresh ideas and looking at adding some excitement while watching TV alone here are a few things you should consider.
Get a comfortable seat (it helps if you fall asleep)
Watching TV alone can be an extremely relaxing and enjoyable experience. This is how to make the most of it: First, find a good seat. You will be spending the entire evening sitting in this spot, so make sure you feel very comfortable.
You might want to put an extra pillow or two behind your back or under your head. A footstool can also make it much more comfortable to fall asleep while watching TV.
If you’re using a recliner, you’re all set! If not, try lying down on the couch with your head propped up on some pillows and a blanket over you. Tuck in all the loose ends of the blanket so that it does not move throughout the night.
This is important because if part of the blanket falls off and gets onto your clothes or body, it could wake you up when you are trying to sleep.
Choose the right snacks
There are many ways to enjoy watching television alone. It’s the most common way to enjoy television, after all. But plenty of people out there don’t want to be alone while watching TV.
They want someone to share their popcorn with. However, you can’t have someone around at all times.
The trick to enjoying yourself when you’re alone is to be prepared. You have to come up with snacks that can be easily consumed one-handed and won’t interrupt your viewing experience.
Here are some ideas:
- Carrot sticks. These are an excellent choice for snacking on during a commercial break. If you’re watching a live sporting event, though, try not to through them at an annoying player.
- Cheese cubes. Cheese cubes are another good snack to eat during commercials because they’re tasty, and only require one hand to eat.
- Pretzels and peanuts. Pretzels and nuts are probably the best snacks for watching TV alone because they won’t make too much noise or distract you from the fun you’re getting on TV.
- Popcorn. Popcorn is another great snack food because it’s light and crunchy. And if there happens to be some milk on your fingers, it’s super easy to wipe.
Binge watch your favourite shows
Let’s be honest: Binge-watching TV shows is awesome. It’s basically like mainlining delicious, brain-numbing, escapist junk food straight into your eyeballs.
This is great if you are watching TV alone but do not have any new shows to watch. Binge-watching a classic you’ve seen before is a great way to spend time alone.
It’s an incredible way to relax, unwind and get completely lost in someone else’s world for a while. All you need is snacks, a well-placed TV, and a quality home entertainment system. “Home entertainment what?” Don’t worry! You’ll do just fine with earphones.
But binge-watching can also make you antisocial and — depending on how good the show is — make you feel emotionally and spiritually empty. But then binge-watching is sometimes a good thing. It’s been linked to all sorts of benefits, from reducing stress to improving memory.
Those are the simple things you can apply to give yourself a good time in front of the big screen. Applying those ideas can help turn a lonely time into a great experience.
